Peles Castle in Romania is one of the most beautiful and complex Castles in Europe and one of the most visited places in the country! A bit of History & Architecture Peles Castle was built by the First King of Romania, Carol I, between the years 1875 - 1914. The King choose the beautiful valley of Peles river to construct a summer residence for him and his family. The Castle was located at the edge of Sinaia, outside the village area. This allowed a tranquil and quiet environment around the Castle grounds. In 1883 Peles castle was officially opened and became the "seat" of the new dynasty. Its location on Prahova Valley was not a coincidence nor a decision made because of the beautiful scenery. Not far from Sinaia is the city of Predeal, which at that time was Romania's border with Austro Hungary, so building the castle here had a strategic role above all. But after the First World War, Romania united with Transylvania and so the castle came to be located right in the heart of the country. Peles Castle - front view Peles Castle in Romania - Role & Attributes The Castle became even more important with time, becoming the summer residence of the Romanian royal family. They used to spend here quite a long time, usually from May to November every year. Important political meetings happened here during this time, such as Crown Councils and meetings between the King and Government. The castle remained the residence of the royal family until 1948 when it was confiscated by the communist regime. In 1953 Peles castle became a museum, although it was actually opened for visits since the time of
